Unfortunately, drunk driving happens, but there are things you can do to make sure you’re part of the solution. Here are some tips for avoiding the worst, courtesy of the Virginia DUI attorney at The Parrish Law Firm. Make it a resolution for the spring: don’t support drinking and
driving. Out with the old, in with the new.
Tips For a Safe Summer: Avoiding Drunk Driving
- Plan ahead. Don’t put yourself in a situation where you’re tempted to get behind the wheel after drinking. Have a sober ride lined up, use a cab service or simply stay the night. Remember that the $10-$20 cab ride is a drop in the pool compared to thousands of dollars in fines and legal fees.
- Discourage everyone around you from drunk driving. You may seem like the villain in the moment, but the next morning when that person wakes up alive and sober, they’ll thank you for it. Be bold and stand up for their well-being.
- Volunteer to be a designated driver. Take the night off and volunteer to drive your friends. They’ll appreciate it and will do the same for you next time.
- Be a responsible party host. Hosting can be a blast, but make sure you’re doing it right. Collect car keys of arriving guests and make sure they have a sober ride home. Serve food before drinks and serve alcohol-free beverages as well. Finally, stop serving alcohol well before the party is over and offer people to stay the night if you can accommodate them. A couch offers a better sleep than a grave.
- Drink in moderation. That means one drink an hour, no more than one drink a day for women and two for men, and no more than four days per week with alcohol consumption.
There are greater than 1 million DUI arrests across the U.S. every year. What many people don’t understand is that you’re BAC (blood alcohol content) doesn’t need to be over 0.08 percent (in Virginia) for you to be arrested for impaired driving. Don’t take the risk. Don’t drink and drive.
